Alkaline Diet : A lifestyle or just a fad ?

The Alkaline Diet ,also referred to as Alkaline Ash diet and Alkaline Acid Diet , is a diet which aims at cleansing body from accumulating of excess acid. Being healthy , requires maintaining of intricate balance of nutrients and toxics in our body . Alkaline Diet not only assures weight loss by shedding off of those unwanted extra pounds but also detoxifies the body and cleanses blood off acid , which in turn reduces risk of hypertension , diabetes , cholesterol build up (which chokes our arteries) and even cancer. Being a protein based diet (mostly) , following it invariably ensures lean body and toned muscles . It also encompasses Gluten – free Diet and Vegan Diet within itself.

Alkaline Diet

As super-model Kate Moss infamously quoted “ Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels “ – implying that you have to starve yourself in order to possess a thin physique but this diet makes sure that a person gets adequate intake of all nutrients and also keeps pH level (the acidity-alkaline balance) of blood constant .

Basic idea behind this diet is: Our body uses more energy to digest protein thus , we tend to burn more fat when we consume proteins and alkalinity combats the acidic build up.

What to avoid while following Alkaline die:

 Dairy products

 Eggs

 Meat

 Wheat

 Grains (most of them)

 Processed and canned food items

 Processed / refined sugar

 Processed / refined / polished rice

 Alcohol

 Caffeine ( tea / coffee)

 Soda

 Aerated drinks

 Artificial sweetener

 Artificial flavours and colouring agents

Alkaline Diet to lose weight

What to consume while following Alkaline die:

 Water (keep yourself hydrated by drinking 8-9 glasses of water)

 Vegetables

 Fruits

 Nuts

 Seeds

 Honey

 Jaggery

 Legumes

 Soya bean

 Tofu

 Hummus

 Mushrooms

A person must begin their day with a glass of water followed by a cup of green tea to replace their morning coffee /tea (yes , even decaf has 600-800 calories). Green tea inhibits fat absorption and reduces appetite. Also include Quinoa as a must in diet ( it has all 9 essential amino acids in it ) , it also makes great burgers . Guava and berries are antioxidant in nature which also gives one a radiating skin !!

To overcome the cravings , keeping a bowl of nuts (overnight soaked in water) in fridge along with a huge platter of diced salad ( add dressing , cucumber and tomatoes when you are ready to consume in order to preserve crispiness of all veggies) which can be devoured with hummus as a dip.

Most people get intimidated at the prospect of giving up so many food items and embracing a Vegan Diet ! I request them to fear not and not to fret , just follow a detailed diet plan :-

Diet 1

Breakfast : hearty oatmeal with blue berries , toasted walnuts with honey , organic butter

Snack : 1 orange (sliced) with ¼ avocadoes (diced) sprinkled with balsamic vinegar

Lunch : White Bean stew and fruits with salad

Snack : toasted nuts , coconut water , dried mango

Dinner : Stew ( broccoli ,cauliflower , cabbage), sautéed spinach with soya bean , simple salad

Diet 2

Breakfast : 1 bowl of seasonal fruit salad , 1 teaspoon flaxseeds , ½ cup organic yoghurt

Snack : 1 pear , handful toasted pumpkin seeds

Lunch : 1 bowl of raw avocado and tomato soup, stuffed tomatoes

Snack : celery with 1 tablespoon almond butter

Dinner : leafy greens and ginger stir fry , broccoli , carrots and peas in coconut curry sauce

Below are few recipes to get one started :

Apple Cider Vinaigrette

1 cup apple juice or cider

¼ cup raw cider vinegar

¼ cup olive oil

¼ cup flax oil

1 tablespoon honey

Pinch sea salt

Mix all ingredients in a jar with a screw top lid . Shake . Can be strored in refrigerator for several weeks

Alkaline Diet to lose weight

White bean stew ( from fried beans)

Beans

1 cup white beans ( great northern , cannellini ) , soaked overnight

4 cups water

1 tsp dried rosemary

1 tsp dried thyme

1 tsp fennel seeds

1 bay leaf

1 stick kombu (optional)

Additional vegetables

1 small onion , chopped

3 cloves garlic. Minced

1 small potato , chopped

1 carrot chopped

½ head Savoy cabbage , chopped

½ cup parsley , chopped

Place all ingredients for beans in a large soup pot . Bring to boil and then , simmer about an hour, partially covered

Add onions , potato , carrots and cabbage , return to boil , then , lower and simmer for half an hour , partially covered
